Qualifications Matter

Our commitment to being Australia’s leading pelvic health physiotherapy provider is at the heart of everything we do. One of the key ways we uphold this standard is by ensuring all our physiotherapists have a postgraduate qualification in pelvic health, so you can feel confident you’re in expert hands from the very start.

To gain a postgraduate qualification in pelvic health, a physiotherapist must complete further study and training.  Once they have completed their post graduate training they can then choose to continue studying and become an APA (Australian Physiotherapy Association) Titled Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist or an APA Specialist Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

Postgraduate Physiotherapy Qualifications

At Pelvic Health Matters, as a minimum we only employ Physiotherapists with a postgraduate qualification in pelvic health.

Postgraduate qualifications in Pelvic Health

A Physiotherapist with postgraduate qualifications in pelvic health has completed an undergraduate Bachelor's, Masters or Doctorate Degree in Physiotherapy. After gaining clinical experience for a minimum of 2 years, they then return to university to complete a Postgraduate Certificate or Masters in Pelvic Health.

In Australia, postgraduate qualifications in pelvic health can only be completed at The University of Melbourne, Victoria or Curtin University in Western Australia. At Pelvic Health Matters, as a minimum we only employ Physiotherapists with one of these qualifications.

Having a postgraduate qualification in Pelvic Health is just the beginning.

Just as an undergraduate physio needs further mentoring because their knowledge and skills are new, a pelvic health postgraduate physiotherapist requires the same. Their advanced knowledge and skills are also new, so they need regular, structured mentoring with an experienced pelvic health physio who can provide feedback and guidance. They also need access to high-quality patient resources and professional development.

Ongoing learning remains important for the entire Pelvic Health Matters team to stay abreast of latest research and its application to patient care.

Further qualifications

APA Titled Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

An APA titled Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is a physiotherapist with significant skills and experience in pelvic health as well as a post graduate qualification. They will then have either completed a clinical Master's degree in pelvic health or undergone an examination process to be granted the APA title.

Specialist Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

An APA titled Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can become a Specialist Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist. A two-year intensive training and examination program is completed to be admitted as a fellow to the Australian College of Physiotherapists. This is the highest clinical recognition that a physiotherapist can attain. As of 2025, there are only 12 Specialist Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapists in Australia. Our Director, Shan Morrison, gained this achievement in 2011.

Are professional development courses equivalent to postgraduate qualifications?

At Pelvic Health Matters, we don’t believe so. There are several professional development courses offered by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and other private providers. These help to build a physio's knowledge and skills in women's and pelvic health. However, while these courses provide foundational knowledge, they are limited in how they prepare physiotherapists to treat specific pelvic health conditions.

Such courses don’t assess how competent the physio is. And, they don’t provide the depth of knowledge required for the complexity of bladder, bowel, prolapse, pelvic and sexual pain conditions.

This is why at Pelvic Health Matters, our minimum standard is a postgraduate pelvic health qualification and an ongoing commitment to life-long learning.
