Menopause Conditions
Menopause is one of the most significant changes a woman goes through in her life. Sometimes called ‘the change’, ‘the pause’ or ‘the second spring’, it’s the stage when menstrual periods stop, marking the end of ovulation and reproductive years. And it’s a stage marked by significant hormonal changes. 20% of women have no symptoms and breeze through. But most of us have some, ranging from mildly annoying to downright debilitating.
Fifty percent of the population goes through menopause. But that doesn’t make it easy. It can be pretty distressing, both physically and emotionally, impacting our lives in many ways. Daily activities, exercise, friends, work, intimate relationships – almost everything can be affected. You might be embarrassed at work by sudden hot flushes or exhausted from poor sleep.
Understanding menopause
Menopause means the last menstrual period. Technically speaking, when you’ve had no periods for 12 consecutive months, you’re considered post-menopausal. This change usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being 51. But experiencing menopause hardly means life is over – most women live a third of their lives after menopause.
Menopause typically occurs due to a decrease in the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, produced by the ovaries. However, some have a sudden medical menopause due to surgery or medication. The lead-up to natural menopause, when hormone levels start to change and periods become irregular, is called perimenopause – and can also cause noticeable changes throughout your body.
During menopause, you might experience hot flushes, night sweats, difficutly sleeping, aches and pains, brain fog, vaginal dryness and loss of libido, bladder leakage or urgency and mood changes. This might limit your ability to work, be intimate and do the things you enjoy. Menopause can also increase the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, so it’s essential you stay on top of your health.
